Canadian History

Sir John A. Macdonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada. He became a lawyer and a politician.As a politician, he helped bring the provinces  together to form the Dominion of Canada. He was one of the 36 Fathers of Confederation to make plans to unite the provinces. They made decisions about what system of government they would have. They also made decisions about laws and the legal system.When Canada became a country on 1 July 1867, Sir John A. Macdonald was appointed as the first Prime Minister. He died on 6 June 1891 while he was still Prime Minister, and just a few months after winning an election.

On December 6th 1917, a French ship with a cargo of explosives collided with another ship in Halifax Harbour.  The ship was totally destroyed.  Many buildings in Halifax were destroyed. Two thousand people died  and about 9000 people were injured.
 Halifax is a city in Nova Scotia that doesn’t freeze in the winter.  During World War 1 Halifax was an important harbour and port town. It is large enough for big ships. War supplies such as food, weapons, explosives and soldiers were sent from Canada and the United States to Europe. Many of these supplies were sent by ship from Halifax. The explosives that she was carrying were being shipped to Europe for the world war I .

Casa Loma sits on a hill overlooking downtown Toronto. Casa Loma began to build in 1911. It is a luxury house that has many rooms, fireplaces, stables and undertunnel as well. Sir Henry Pellatt and his wife Mary owned the house. but they did not live in it for very long because they ran out of money and could not afford to live there. They moved out in 1923 and in 1933 Casa Loma was seized by the city of Toronto because of the property taxes on Casa Loma had not been paid. Casa Loma is now a museum and you can tour the buildings and gardens.

Some Acronyms

RRSP, TSFA, and RESP stand for what.

RRSP:  Registered Retirement Savings Plan
Your RSP is a valuable retirement tool. It’s important to learn as much as you can about how  RRSP works and how it can benefit you.
 RRSP is the most effective retirement saving and investing tool available to most Canadians. It lets the money you invest grow unaffected by taxes until withdrawn. That means your money has the potential to grow faster and you’ll accumulate more than if you invest outside RRSP. What’s more, you’ll get a tax deduction for every dollar you put into RRSP, reducing your annual tax bill.
Investments in  RRSP grow on a tax-deferred basis until money is withdrawn. The fact that your plan is “registered” with the Canada Revenue Agency allows you to benefit from this tax-deferred growth.
Outside RRSP, most investments are taxed. Interest is fully taxable, half of capital gains are taxable and dividends are taxable but eligible for the dividend tax credit. Inside RRSP, none of these taxes apply.
Because you pay no tax on investment growth while your money remains inside RRSP, your investments compound far more quickly. At the end of the road, that makes a huge difference.

RRSP vs. Non-RRSP Investing

RRSPNon-RRSP
Amount Invested$10,000$10,000
Years Invested30 years30 years
Marginal Tax RateN/A46%
Average Annual Return6%6%
Total Savings$838,016.77$510,717.60
Difference$327,299.17
Even though you’ll be taxed on amounts you withdraw from RRSP savings in retirement, your tax rate is likely to be lower than during your working years. So the tax bite will be considerably less. And the money left in a retirement plan continues to grow sheltered from tax.
 are tax deductible. So they lower your annual taxable income and your yearly income tax bill. The tax savings will depend on your marginal tax rate and how much you contribute to your RRSP. In 2013 you’re allowed to contribute the lesser of $23,820 or 18% of the earned income reported on your previous year’s tax return. If you make less than your maximum allowable contribution in any year, the shortfall can be carried forward to future years.
You have until March 1 of the following calendar year to make contributions for the current tax year (subject to change if March 1 falls on a weekend or holiday or if it’s a leap year).

RESP:

Education is the key to your children's future. But it's costly - currently as much as $60,000*for a four year degree at a Canadian university. A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a smart way to maximize education savings. Tax-sheltered investment growth and eligibility for government grants can make a big contribution to your child's future.

You can open an RESP for an individual child, or opt for a flexible family plan that lets you save for all your children.
An individual plan is set up for one person, who does not have to be related to you. There are no age limits, so you can even set up an RESP for yourself or another adult.
With a family plan you can name one or more children as beneficiaries. The children must be related to you. You can add or change beneficiaries at any time.

TSFA:

A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a great way to save without worrying about taxes eating away at your investment profits. You can save and invest up to $5,500 a year without paying tax on any earnings that may accrue. You can use a TFSA to enhance your overall financial plan and help you save for both long and short term goals.

It's not clear how the painting went missing from Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, Reutersreports. Authorities are working to authenticate it.

IEP

On April 11, we went to Metro Toronto Convention Center Job Fair. Joseph worked there as a volunteer who welcomed us by the elevator when we went downstairs. Then we hung the badge and had a bag with some documents.At first, we went to the exhibition hall. There are some stalls. Most of them are colleges or universities and training agency. I think that most people came there today should be immigrants who need jobs. Maybe the organizers held the conference that made the immigrants to melt the society as soon as possible. Then I went to meeting room to listen to the session. There are one host and five guest speakers. I felt the session liked a workshop we have studied. Self introduction and some small talk are the way to contact people. The guest speakers are immigrants who are successful now. They told us that the language is important and education opens a door to your career. Yes, I know, but learning English well is a hard procedure.  At last, One guest speaker, Diana Chan gave us a presentation about be social to get noticed. She said LinkedIn is now the popular application in the world. And your profile must be profession. You should connect more people that you can. Maybe someone in you circle will give you the opportunity you need.
B=Brand yourself
E=Engage in meaningful conversation
S=Search & study
O=Optimize your LinkedIn profile
C=Connect with new people
I=Introduce like minded people

comparing Ontario legal minimum wage with other provinces

The highest wage rate, $11.00, is in Nunavut.  Minimum wage in Ontario is as same as BC now.  Minimum wage in Ontario is less than in Yukon.  From June 1, Ontario minimum wage will increase $0.75 to $11.00 an hour.  We will have the same standard with Nunavut.  Minimum wage in Ontario will be more than in Yukon in the future time.

Concert

I did not go to concert yesterday.  Today I asked Rui how the concert was. Rui said it was awesome. She gave me the program sheet. I opened it and saw the list of the program. I thought that the left side was the name of songs, and the right side was the name of the leader of the song. I like choral performance. The  mixed voice make the songs sounded more harmony. The songs that was sung by children or adults are the two different styles. The children's voices are more purify. I thought my classmates were all soaked in the beautiful and peaceful world that the songs gave them.

TRL

We went to TRL on April 23. Our Teacher did not accompany with us this time. It was a challenge for us to get there. We had to find our own way. When we got there, some of our LINC classmates were already there.  A staff member led us to the fourth floor and showed us the ESL books. There are two kinds of labels on the back of the books. One is open shelf for reference, which you can not borrow. The other is open circulation, which you can take home. There are plenty of books, and many people study there. I like this atmosphere. Feng was interested in the  card catalogue that are written by hand. She said she wrote many cards that are still preserved in her university's library.
Next, we went to the Innovation Hub on the first floor. A young man introduced us to the 3 D Printer. I saw the machine printing on a flat board.  On the back of the printer, there was a bunch of plastic string that went into a pipe that  connected to the printer head. I thought the string maybe hot-melted and jet out, like 2 D printer using the ink cartridge. 3 D printer lays down successive layers of printing material, then performs the shape of the object. It is very useful for industry to make models.
We joined the workshop for newcomers at 1 P.M. The coach was so nice. According to everyone 's case, she gave the suggestions. She told us to be active and push the job developer  to help us call the company and book an  interview.

Field Trip to Niagara Falls

Yesterday, we had a field trip to Niagara Falls. When I was in China, I knew the Niagara Falls. It is one of the largest falls in the world. Meanwhile it is one of the most attractive resort when you go to America and Canada. This week we have been studying the War of 1812, a battle broke out over there. So we went to the site ourselves.
On the road, Joseph told us some places when driving. We saw the bridge across the Lake Ontario, Welland Canal that connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and you can sail on. It is more safe than Niagara River because Niagara River has a huge drop. We also passed Guelph and  McMaster University. Feng was interested in assembly line of the Ford. After two hours' journey we arrived at rainbow bridge. We could see two huge wide falls. Most of the falls were frozen, but the water was still flowing. We were covered by the water mist. The water was so clear, the color of the water is light green like a purified jade. The Niagara River was still frozen. Maybe summer is a good season for traveling. I can imagine it will be funny when we sail down the river and the falls drop down making our body soaked. A amazing thing happened in welcome center that a women who sat beside us can speak Chinese standard and clearly.
Before lunch, Joseph led us see the site of the battle--Drummond Hill Cemetery.
Then we had a lunch in McDonald. We had happy time there.
The most expected thing was shopping at Outlet. We went into some famous brand shops, such as Coach, MK, CK, ECCO, etc. I saw some people taking packages out of the shops. I did not buy anything, but just looked around. I always buy things when needed. Even though the items were cheaper, but I was not enthusiastic to buy things.
Then we went to Value Village. Over there the commodities were cheap and were donated or second hand. I saw a Danier jacket and the price of which was $19.99.
I also saw that movie tapes were sold. I wondered who watch movie by video tape recorder today.
On the way home,it was rush hour. Joseph's GPS had red mark indicating traffic congestion. I knew that GPS communicate with the satellite. If every GPS has an IP address like a computer. I wanted to know how it works. If I have time I will search for its operating principle.
It was a happy journey.I like field trips. Not only can I learn something about Canada, but also can we have more close relationship.

Field Trip of University of Toronto

Yesterday, we took a field trip to University of Toronto. I have been to U of T before. I knew I just looked around the campus. But this time, we would have a tour guide and could  have a depth travel. She was a beautiful girl with lovely smile. Whenever she smiled, her eyes became crescent shape. After explaining and visiting a spot, she asked us whether we had any questions, I always said in my mind, “repeat, speak three times.” I knew it was due to my poor listening comprehension, I could not catch her words.
U of T's predecessor was King College.Then during a long time, some colleges united together to form U of T of today. The guide showed us the building of University College that is very famous and magnificent. When I went in it, to my surprise, it is rather simple. Because I thought that a beautiful castle must be luxury. Looking over the lawn, there is a building with a circle roof that has a big classroom.  It is up to you to choose big classroom or small classroom for studying or having a seminar. The Soldiers' Tower is a monument that commemorates the students of the U of T serving in World Wars. Then we went to the Hart House that is used as entertainment place, not for study. We visited the St. Michael's College, Victoria College, and Trinity College. In Trinity College, the guide took us to see a chapel, and the pastor will come in meeting time. Wedding can also be hold there. Near the cafeteria, I saw a board on the wall that lists the leaders of the college and divinity, Because it was so hurry, I could not see it clearly, the leader was changed every year, why? We also visited the libraries. It was so amazing that there are 44 libraries in U of T. We visited Robarts library that is a 14-floor building. It looks like a turkey or peacock. It has collected a large number of books, especially there are some old and precious books. 1-8 floors are open for public, others are for students.  Besides studying, students need physical exercises. A big sports center shocked me. There are a standard Olympic swimming pool, sports ground,  many exercise rooms in it. I thought the students are really enjoying their lives in the University. How I hope I can study there! Maybe my daughter will have the chance. Before 1 p.m., our trip came to an end.

Record Conversation of ESLPOD 717

Last week was a busy week.The week before last week, my daughter came back from Albion Hill, she had been there for three days. I washed all her clothes that she took there. Housework was unlimited, I felt boring everyday. But Wednesday,the Chinese classmates went to Teresa's House. She made so many tasted foods to treat us. Feng's dumplings looked delicate and tasted good. We were all happy and took photos. I learned the way of cooking some dishes.I will try later if I prepare the stuff. And for next two-day's supper, I did oyster soup. Because these days the Olympic game was hold. I watched the hockey games that Canada team played. It was so great that Canada won the gold medal in men and women hockey games. Canada hockey team has wonderful skills and smart performance.I like captain Crosby and goalie Price. They are all 26 years old, and did great job in the match. It was pity that I had not practiced my English at all.

snow storm

It was already Wed. 0:30 a.m., I looked outside, it had not snowed yet. I slept, and woke up earlier at seven. Then I checked the teacher’s blog where a message was posted that the school had been closed. I wondered if the children need to go to school. I browsed the TDSB website. On the top of the webpage, there was a notice that the school remained open. I left a message at my chat group of the Linc class, “sleep, do not go to school.”  Then I cooked for my daughter. When I came back home after sending her to school, Iris said in the chat group that today school was still open.
I realized I had not refreshed the blog, and did not know the latest message. It was a heavy snow. It was hard to decide whether to go or not. I knew if I did not go to school, maybe I would surf the Internet all day. I decided to go and learn something in school. There were more people in the bus than usual. I got off the bus, the snow was thick, and it was higher than my ankle. It was hard to walk on the snow road. I thought that the workers may be busy and they swept the main street first. It was only six students who had come to school. We had a pronunciation class. After the class, Ada met her friends, we talked a lot. Her friends were very kind, and told us some useful information. At the park lot, we found it was a big problem to drive through the snow. Pei swept a long trail for the car, and it was a hard job. The tires were slipping on the snow, and it was not easy to back the car. We spent much time to sweep the snow for the car. When we got on the car, we were all relieved.

I was told how to make fish balls before. I just bought two basa fillets. I prepare the material, including: pork stuffing, fillet, wine, salt, ginger, pepper powder, soy sauce, oyster sauce, egg, and flour. Because the fillet has vein, I had to use knife to scratch the fish meat at first. If you have no time, you can chop the fillet up. Of course the best way is to use a machine to smash the fillets. The fish meat was so sticky that I scratched the meat from the knife and my hands. Then I mixed all the material and stirred them along the same direction. If I felt the stuff was not very sticky and crunchy, I would add some flour. When I felt the stuff was all right, I grasped a piece of meat, made it into a ball and put it on a plastic bag. After I had finished, I put all the fish balls into the refrigerator. When I cook noodle, I can put some fish balls in it. It is so easy to do that, isn’t it?

A Trip to Pacific Mall

We went to Pacific Mall on Jan.31st. It was the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year. As it is the year of horse, We can see the figures of horses everywhere. In the middle of the mall, there was a big stage that was decorated in red with a picture of horses on board set in the back of the stage. We were told there would be a show at 1 p.m. We wanted to take photos in front of the stage. A nice staff member said we could stand on the stage. Chang took a lot of photos for us. Many of my classmates were attracted to Chinese herb. They bought Luohanguo to treat coughs.
Then we went upstairs. There are so many restaurants and small shops. At noon,we had lunch there. I chose a stall that sells fishballs,beef balls etc. I have heard the beef balls are crunchy and tasty. I tasted it, but I felt it was just so-so. Anyway it was an interesting trip.

introduce time travel story for presentation

One afternoon, I went home with Pei, we were talking about English study. I said, “If I had studied harder before, I would not go to the Linc School. I now understand the meaning of the proverb ‘A young idler, an old beggar’. By far I know why the young girls always like reading the time travel story, they wanted to go back to spend the life once again and remedy the regret in the past”.
Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time and space. There are both backward and forward time travels.
The famous time travel movie is “terminator series”, they tell the story about Skynet that sends Terminator back to the past to kill the human leader John before he is born and kill John himself as a child.
In China, there were several types of time travel story. I will give two typical examples.
1, The actress lives in present who for some reasons leaves her present time, and makes a time travel to ancient time. She maybe make time travel herself, rebirths as an infant, or her soul attaches a dying girl’s body. Whatever the way she comes, whether she lives in poor or wealth, she always has a brilliant life in that period, because she had the living experiences and skills before.You know, in ancient Chinese man can have many women, but only one is legal. In order to have better living situation, the actress may have fight with her mother, her father’s concubines, her sisters, or other women of her husband.
2, When the actress woke up, she went back to her childhood. As she knew everything in the future, so while studying, she was setting up a firm to develop her career. She arranged her actions in advance and earned much money to change her fate before.
Time travel story meets the young girl’s imagination of beauty, power, love, wealthy, status, etc., and creates a great wonderful world that breaks away from the reality. Time travel story is one style of the net novel. It is easy and popular to read. But some girls are crazy about the story, and then have unrealistic thoughts. They expect to have a time travel and do something.

1,I do not know if time travel story is the exactly translation.
2,I have referred to time travel,time travel in fiction, terminator in Wikipedia. www.baidu.com, 穿越小说)

trip

We have been studying for many days the Canadian Charter of rights. So we had an activity last Wednesday to go to the Ontario Legislative Building. Sharon is a good teacher with much energy and patience. In her class she made so many instances that we can well learn the spirit of the Canadian human rights. We got off the subway train at Queen’s park station. The parliament building is near the station. I have been to the University of Toronto, and  have seen the building, but I do not know it is the Parliament building of Ontario.  We entered the building. A guide took us to visit it. At first, we saw the Speaker’s chair, she told us that when the Speaker retires he can take the chair away. There is a Speaker who retired, but he said that his house was too small to hold the chair, so he left the chair there. Now the Speaker took the copy of the chair home when he retired. Speaker lived in the building with his family. Every Speaker has a HON.(Honourable) title. Then we went to see the Mace with two shining diamonds.  We continued to the other side of the building, the guide told us that this side of the building is supported by marble posts after the fire of 1813. We went upstairs, and saw that the first office in the second floor is Kathleen Wynne’s. Along the aisle we would visit the chamber. On the wall, the door’s left the picture of Queen is hung, the right is Prince Philip’s picture. We entered the chamber, it is not very big. At first, I noticed the Speaker’s chair is in the front of chamber. In front of it there are the clerk’s table and the typewriter’s table. Liberal party is on the left side, NDP and other small parties are on the right side. Kathleen Wynne sits in the sixth in the first row of the left side.
Then the visit was finished.

China is a communist nation. The highest power is grasped tightly by seven people. In China not all the people care about politics. The radio, TV, publishing are controlled by the government. Everyday's news say China is the best in the world, the situation is peaceful, and the leaders devote their life to the country, however, outside China the situation is terrible. This happens everyday. When we were young, we trusted the government,because
we only can get the information from the tongue of the party—the newspaper, TV, radio, and political study. But now, the Internet has developed very quickly, we can share the information in every place in the world. Someone posted something in the Internet, people can see it in the other side of the world less than one minute. In China, if a big accident happens, the local officials maybe hide the truth, otherwise they would be punished by the government. But not all the messages can be kept secret, more or less it may be leaked. Someone living near the place may have knew it, he may tell his  friends with chat applications in the Internet. The message spreads quickly and makes a huge impact. Now, people can supervise officials through the Internet.It is often not the supervision department who found the crime clue first.
So people in China want the politics to be more transparent, and based on three principles--openness, fairness and justice.
In Canada, people have the right to criticize the leaders, if the leaders have done or said something wrong, they may be abused, and even be dismissed.

HAPPINESS

Esmail made a presentation about happiness. Then I wanted to say sth.
People are divided three levers. The lowest care only about their fundamental physical demands, such as eating, drinking and playing. The second level promote their life quality, they would concentrate in their hobbies. The highest would pursue the peace of the soul, and they are often involved in the charity activities.
I think I belong to the first level. We came to Canada, we must survive at first. Everyone likes money, but how much is enough? People have unlimited desire. I want to win lottery, but I know it is not very realistic. So we must do our best and try to live more comfortable. Maybe someday my family has the ability to feedback the society. Not only can the rich do good deeds, but also can the ordinary people do. Guided by what you are feeling in the heart, you will have a reasonable expectation about the physical and life demands, Both too high and too low would lead to imbalance of the mind. (I referred to articles from the Internet)

modern diseases

Four modern diseases mentioned by Dr. Grout are obesity, diabetes, diarrhea, and arthritis.

With the development of the society, people can eat diverse foods. If the food includes too much oil, salt, sugar and artificial coloring, and people eat a lot and do not have enough physical exercises, they will be obese. ice hockey

It is the first time that I have watched the ice hockey game in site. I felt this game was so exciting but rude. The sportsmen slided on ice with high speed, and used the stick to push the puck. They cooperated very well and accurately passed the puck. It was so fierce a game that the sportsmen were changed every few minutes to maintain high speed movement and physical strength. To get the puck, they may collide, shove, even fight with each other. The game is so dangerous, the sportsmen may be injured at the bones, hit head, the most horrific is throat cut by skates blade.

the days without power

Dec.20, I did not get up early as usual, my daughter and I stayed in bed until 9 o’clock. We were very happy because it would be a long holiday of two weeks. After I called my father on Saturday midnight, I went to bed and thought about many things that I wanted to do tomorrow.
Unfortunately, a new day began, the power is out. I thought the hydro would  be back soon.  In July, a heavy storm caused the power outage, but the power got recovered soon, it did not affect the life. I thought it may be a little accident. I still prepared the meal for moon. My husband was listening to the radio, he went downstairs and told me that the power was down, maybe it would take seventy-two hours to repair the line. So we went to the supermarket and  bought some food that can be stored and  need not to be heated. The temperature of the room was fifteen degree celsius, so we had to wear the thick coat which is usually worn outside the house. I couldn’t do anything I want.
On Monday we went to the library, there were so many people, all the jacks are full of plugs. In the library we felt warm. In these two days, we were tired of eating bread, so we went to sears to have Chinese food.
 On Tuesday Dec 24, we went to the library too, the library would be closed at 1 o’clock. According to the internet news, we knew that near the library there was a warm center that we can go for sheltering. We visited the warm center, and then went home. The house was not warm anymore. We poured the hot water into two plastic boxes that served as a heater.
 On Wednesday, we went to the warm center again at 11 o’clock. I met a Linc school classmate there and chatted with her about how we survived in those dark and cold days. I knew some Chinese friends over there, we exchanged some ideas about the life in Canada. This warm center offered food, hot water, and snacks. I was grateful for the government’s emergency action and the firms that had donated the food. I am willing to help others when I have ability.
 On Thursday, the boxing day, we were fortunate that the power was back at five fifty, thank for the hard work of the Hydro workers. We went to the sears and bought some clothes for my husband.
 Our life returned back to the normal order.
